![Man admits hurling abuse at police during Bideford new year celebrations]()
This is North Devon -- A MAN who was arrested after hurling abuse at police officers during Bideford's New Year's Eve celebrations has been given a conditional discharge. Simon Williams, 42, of Stucley Road, Bideford, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly at North Devon Magistrates' Court on Friday. The court was told how staff at the St John's Ambulance medical centre had called for police assistance after experiencing trouble with Williams. Clifford Howard, for the prosecution, told the court that when police arrived and cautioned Williams, he became highly abusive and aggressive towards the officers. Mr Howard said: "There was a short struggle and he was escorted into a police van where he was kicking and shouting." Williams, who had no legal representation, told the court he had initially taken a friend to the medical centre for treatment after she had fallen over, and blamed the police for the incident. He said: "Everything was fine until the police turned up. I'm going to make a complaint. "I had a bit to drink but I knew everything that was happening. I just wanted to be there with my friend." Williams was given a conditional discharge for six months and ordered to pay a victim's surcharge of £15.
