![Devon and Cornwall Police's Christmas campaign sees drop in number of drink drivers caught]()
This is North Devon -- DEVON and Cornwall Police have released the results of last year's Christmas drink-driving campaign, which saw a number of drivers caught at more than four times the legal limit. The campaign saw a total of 1,326 drivers tested for alcohol over the Christmas period, with 167 failing the test. Although the numbers caught are down on the previous year's results, a greater percentage of those tested proved to be over the limit than in 2012. Inspector Richard Pryce, roads policing inspector, said: "Nationally and locally a lot of work is being done to educate people about the risks and dangers regarding drink-driving. "Despite this and the threat of losing your licence, job, liberty or worse, it is disappointing that this campaign reveals such a reckless approach from some people regarding their safety and the safety of their fellow road users. "As always, catching drink-drivers is a year-round priority for us and we will continue to crack down on drink and drug driving to actively contribute to making our roads safer." The legal alcohol limit for driving is 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. However, police in Devon said a number of staggering readings had been seen, including a 28-year-old woman who was stopped over four times the limit at 4.30pm, and a man was tested as having 145 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath at 11am. Mr Pryce said: "Some of the detection results we had are staggering. I find it utterly incredible that some individuals will drive after drinking so much as to be three or four times the drink-drive limit. "They show scant regard for the lives of other people on the road. For some, clearly the messages are not getting through. It may be that for these, only the sanction of the law in a court will make them realise."
