Police operation to track down criminals on the roads held in Beaumont Leys This is Leicestershire -- Police ran an operation this morning to track down criminals on the roads of Leicester. Officers used the city's network of automatic number plate recognition cameras, (ANPR), – which can read a plate and cross reference it with a number of databases, including the national police computer, in seconds – to scan vehicles in the Beaumont Leys area. Suspect vehicles were taken to a car park at the Beaumont Leys Shopping Centre where officers questioned the drivers. Other agencies, including the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, (Vosa), the Home Office Immigration Enforcement Team and Trading Standards were also present. The operation began at 10am and ran through until 3pm. Police were totting up the results of the operation this afternoon. Leicestershire's Deputy Chief Constable Simon Edens said: "This operation is about denying criminals the use of the roads. "We can't do this every day, but if it disrupts people's criminal activity then it will have been a success. "People pay their Council Tax to get a good police service and this is the kind of thing they expect us to be doing – being out here doing everything we can to catch people who are breaking the law."
