Police officer assaulted as chip shop stab inquiry is launched This is Nottingham --

THE stabbing of a 17-year-old outside a chip shop is being treated as attempted murder, police said.

The teenager was injured close to the Apollo Fish Bar, Burton Road, Carlton, around 8pm on Wednesday.

Police cars, an ambulance and the police helicopter were called to the incident and a 15-year-old boy was arrested the same night.

It also emerged a police officer guarding the crime scene after the attack was knocked unconscious after being set upon by a group of people.

The 17-year-old stabbing victim was taken to Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, but his injuries were minor and he was discharged to recover at home.

Police set up a cordon and guarded the scene as detectives launched an investigation.

Notts Police said an officer "on duty" in Burton Road later the same night was approached by a group of people.

A scuffle broke out around 9.20pm and the officer was knocked unconscious.

The Post understands he was guarding the scene of the earlier attack at the time.

He was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre and later discharged. It is not clear why the group approached him.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the stabbing and yesterday there was a heavy police presence in the area as officers went door-to-door talking to people living nearby.

The 15-year-old was being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday afternoon.

Although police did not say exactly how the 17-year-old was hurt, it is understood he was left bleeding in the street after being stabbed.

It happened at about 8pm outside a row of shops including the fish bar and a few doors down from the Phoenix Amateur Boxing Club, former club of world champion Carl Froch.

It is not clear what the 17-year-old was stabbed with.

People living nearby described hearing the police helicopter circling overhead at the time of the stabbing.

Iain Franklin, 51, visiting his mother Hazel in Burton Road, said: "I could see the helicopter from where I live in Chatsworth Avenue, my wife was on her Kindle and said people were saying someone had been stabbed.

"You just wonder what's happening in the area, my mother said it was like something out of Miami Vice at the time.

"At least it's not fatal, thank God, you do get worried when it happens so close to people you know."

A woman living in Burton Road, who asked not to be named, said: "It is quiet around here normally. There were police cars and ambulances and you just try to keep out of the way because you know something terrible has happened.

"It's so sad, someone's mum and dad are going through awful things."

Several people visited the row of shops yesterday only to find them closed inside the police cordon, which was expected to be lifted by today.

One man, from nearby Carlton Square, who did not want to give his name, said: "It's so safe here normally you could walk about with your eyes closed.

"I've honestly never felt threatened in all the time I've lived here."

Notts Police asked anyone with information about the stabbing to contact them on 101 or alternatively Crimestoppers, which is free and anonymous, on 0800 555111.

The force also asked for information about the later incident, adding a 44-year-old man, an 18-year-old man and two 17-year-old boys have been arrested on suspicion of assault and public order offences. Reported by This is 23 hours ago.
