This is Scunthorpe --

POLICE officers are targeting people who do not wear seatbelts when travelling in a month-long campaign.

Humberside Police is running the casualty reduction initiative throughout September.

It will focus on educating people on the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.

The campaign will also aim to make sure children have the correct restraints in place when travelling in a vehicle.

Officers will enforce the campaign at locations across North Lincolnshire during the month.

Statistics provided by the force show wearing a seatbelt prevents 370 deaths and 7,000 serious injuries nationally each year. But the figures also show 15 per cent of front seat passengers and 50 per cent in rear seats go without wearing one.

It is an offence to fail to wear a seat belt when travelling as the driver or passenger in a vehicle and the fine for being caught without one was increased from £60 to £100 from August 16.

PC Barry Gardner, Humberside Police casualty reduction officer, said: "It has been law for a number of years to wear a seatbelt.

"Since the introduction of that law, we have seen injury levels reduce drastically.

"If you make the conscious decision that you are not going to wear a seatbelt, then not only are you putting yourself at risk, you are putting your passengers at risk." Reported by This is 22 hours ago.
