![Derbyshire Chief Constable Mick Creedon says police 'manipulate' crime stats]()
This is Nottingham -- POLICE officers across the country are "manipulating" crime figures because they are under pressure to show crime is falling, Derbyshire's Chief Constable has said. Mick Creedon was quoted in a national newspaper speaking at a police conference a day after MPs heard claims police were orchestrating statistics to improve perceptions of performance. "Inadvertently, I still think we are putting pressure on officers to do all that they can to manipulate and drive down the numbers," he said. "If we really wanted to get the true position on crime, we would see a massive increase in domestic violence and on sexual violence." A parliamentary committee was told by officers on Wednesday that police crime figures are often fiddled using techniques which are common knowledge across the police service. An inquiry into recording practices by the Inspectorate of Constabulary is due to report back next autumn.
