Armed police arrest burglary suspects in Beaconsfield Road, Leicester This is Leicestershire -- Armed police sealed off a street for up to 10 hours to arrest two men on suspicion of burglary. Residents in Beaconsfield Road, in Leicester's West End, were ordered to stay in their homes throughout the operation last night. Leicestershire Police said armed officers were sent to the scene because there was a possibility there would be guns in the house they were searching. Residents said officers used a door ram to force their way into the house, which is near the junction with Fosse Road South. Residents added that a man and a woman were led from the house a short time later, frisked in the street and then led away. Officers are said to have remained at the scene until 5am today when they led out a second man. Police have confirmed the men were arrested as part of ongoing burglary investigations. The force has not said whether any firearms were recovered. Paramedics and fire crews – some wearing heavy protective clothing – remained at the scene throughout the evening. A resident said: "I was outside my house having a cigarette when the police arrived. "They told me to go back into my home and to stay there. "They had a battering ram which I think they used to break down the back door of the house. "A jeep arrived with armed officers too. "Everyone stayed inside and watched what was going on. "The police were there for hours and we couldn't go out. "As far as I know it ended about 5am when they brought a man out of the house and took him away." Another resident added: "There must have been at least six police officers carrying machine guns. "Nobody would tell us what was going on, so it was all very scary." A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said this afternoon: "Officers were executing a warrant at a property in Beaconsfield Road in relation to two burglary investigations. "As there was a possibility that firearms may have been in the property, in the interests of public and officers' safety the armed response team was also deployed to the scene. "Two men, aged 31 and 32, were arrested during the operation and currently remain in police custody. "The property in Beaconsfield Road remains cordoned off to allow officers to search the property. "Leicestershire Police thanks the local community for their patience and co-operation during the operation." Reported by This is 2 hours ago.
