Police catch 100 speeding drivers in one hour in village near Keynsham This is Bristol -- POLICE say they caught nearly 100 speeding drivers in the space of an hour with a single mobile speed camera van in a village near Keynsham. The Avon and Somerset force revealed details of the operation in Farmborough last week. Those caught by the camera face a fine of £100 and three points on their licences, with some offered an alternative of paying £100 to attend a speed awareness course. Beat manager PC Samantha Kayser said: "We're not pleased at all to have caught so many drivers in such a short space of time but we do hope that it will send a strong message to motorists that we will enforce the speed limit through the village. "What we really want to do is educate drivers to slow down and not to break the law." It was the first time a mobile speed camera had been used to enforce the 30mph limit on the A39 through the village. Police say it followed recent traffic monitoring by a recently-formed Community Speed Watch group of volunteers, who found so many drivers breaking the limit that police could not cope with the volume of warning letters which needed to be sent out. Since August, 295 out of a total of nearly 3,500 vehicles monitored were found to be speeding, with the fastest recorded at 58mph. PC Kayser said: "This shows that people can have an impact on an important issue in their community. Local people identified the speeding problem, we helped them set up the Speed Watch group, and they're having an immediate effect." She said that the mobile camera van would be returning to Farmborough in future. Yesterday the Avon and somerset force released details of a series of sites where cameras will be monitoring traffic this week. Reported by This is 4 hours ago.
