No let-up on Lincolnshire Police war on drink-drivers

A police blitz on drink-drivers will now target new year revellers who get behind the wheel.
Officers have already named and shamed 50 people caught over the limit during December.
And police say there will be no respite between Christmas and new year period.
Inspector Rob Gowler from Lincolnshire Roads Policing Unit declared: "People should not be under any illusion that there will be any let-up just because the festivities have come to an end.
"Drink driving forms part of the 'Fatal Four' causes of injuries and deaths on our roads, along with speed, seatbelts and mobile phones.
"If people choose to put lives in danger by irresponsible and reckless acts, then they should expect to be dealt with by the full weight of the law."
The anti drink and drug driving campaign was aimed at catching culprits at any time of the day – including the morning after the night before.
Jim Tyner, Community Policing Inspector at Lincolnshire Police, said: "Think of the impact on families who have lost a loved one through drink-driving.
"Naming and shaming has proved popular. If the risk of being publicly shamed has prevented just one person from drink-driving, it's worth it."
The 2012 festive blitz saw 100 drivers arrested for drink or drug driving compared to 119 arrests the year before.
Police say this is proof their campaign is working. Reported by This is 10 hours ago.

Threatened to 'slash' the police if he was arrested
This is Cornwall --
A TRURO man who told a police officer: "I'll put your head in a cement mixer" when advised to calm down after being abusive in the early hours, pleaded guilty at Truro Magistrates' Court to using threatening behaviour.
Alison May, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said the police had been alerted by a woman he was with who approached their car in Ferris Town, Truro, waving her arms to them.
She started complaining about a matter and was abusive, then Peter Richard Silverlock, 24, of Lemon Row, Truro, joined in, calling the police officers offensive names and saying: "If you try to arrest me I'll slash you."
He said he had a difficult day and had been unable to take his medication. He had a previous conviction for criminal damage.
Silverlock told the magistrates he was a recovering alcoholic and about to go into rehab for drug misuse. He had been under the influence of drugs that night. He apologised for his language.
He was fined £100 and £20 victim surcharge. Reported by This is 18 hours ago.

Business as usual for police during the festive season

CHRISTMAS may be a time for the festive spirit and goodwill to all men, and women, but for officers and detectives at Surrey Police it will be business as usual as they patrol the streets and tackle serious crimes during the holiday.
While millions of parents will be walking up at the crack of dawn with kids frantically pulling at the sheets to get down stairs to the presents under the tree, police will be busy interviewing offenders who decided to abandon the Christmas spirit – or take it one step too far.
The idea of facing these foes during such a merry occasion may not seem like the ideal way to spend Christmas, but the close-knit family atmosphere and the promise of food and decorations around the office will add a lighter touch to the day.
PC Helen Simon will be one of those officers in CID keeping a close eye on us on December 25 and says you never can tell what it will bring.
"It's unpredictable," she told the Mirror. "You just don't know because this Christmas people are getting paid afterwards, so there may be lots of people out drinking on New Year's eve or Boxing Day, but if they're struggling for money they might not be."
She added: "It varies and depends what shift you're working. If you're on the early shift you often have lots of prisoners to be interviewing because they'll come in from Christmas Eve down the pub. On the late shift you may have prisoners left over from the morning."
And it won't just be CID who will be missing their homemade Christmas dinner. There will be plenty of officers patrolling the streets making sure the festivities don't get out of hand.
Just like their colleagues, it won't be all work and no play, although every now and then someone does try their best to spoil the occasion.
"There was one year we arrested someone at 11.50pm on New Year's Eve," said neighbourhood inspector Richard Haycock.
"You never can tell what you're going to get on Christmas Day. It can be very, very quiet or you can have one major incident like a big accident and then it's all hands to the pump. There's really just no way of knowing." Reported by This is 13 hours ago.
